A Monthly Publication of
Knights of Columbus,

Brother Knights,
“Habemus
Papam” we have a new Father !!! With those words we found out that our new
Holy Father, Benedict XVI would be our shepherd and guide. Since our April newsletter we watched as Pope
John Paul II taught us just how sacred all life is right up until natural death
and we mourned as he was called home to God.
We shared in the lonely days without our leader and celebrated as John
Paul II was laid to rest. We endured the
endless media speculation on who would be the new pope and we smiled when
Cardinal Ratzinger was elevated to the Chair of Peter. We as followers of Christ have witnessed firsthand
the history of our Church being made in the past month through our sorrow and
joy! We are now called to pray for the
repose of the soul of John Paul II and for strength, guidance, wisdom and
holiness for Pope Benedict XVI……peace be with them both !!!
Our May meeting (Monday May 9th at 7:30 pm) will be exciting
in that we have a First Degree and then during our regular meeting we will be
voting on our Slate of Officers for the 2005/2006 Columbian Year. Mark your calendars and plan to be there!!
If you are new to the
Council and have been wondering where your Brother Knights have gotten those
stylish and dapper blue polo shirts with the K of C logo emblazoned on them,
Brother Jim Winstead has found a source and will be
taking orders (see below). The more
shirts we as a Council order, the less they cost so now is your chance to own
several at a very good cost !!! And they even have sizes for our “Ladies of
the Knights”.
Take a look brothers
at the opportunities to participate listed below……many of our members travel
and cannot make the meetings but you can still be a part of our great
organization beyond paying dues by jumping in and participating in any one or
more of our activities…….the key is to BE
INVOLVED !!!
Finally, a couple of
our brothers were kind enough to provide me with our Council By-Laws which were
adopted in 1999. In between flights at
the airport I typed them into Word format……..and after having gone through them
realized that it is time to take a look at them and possibly make some
amendments. I am going to propose that
the Officers Meeting commence one hour early this coming Thursday with the sole
purpose of starting to take a look at changes we might want to make. ANY brother is welcome to come and take part;
you don’t have to be an officer. I will
be sending them out by separate email and have copies available at the
meeting. Of course the Council will need
to vote on any proposed changes at an upcoming meeting after they have been
published and then they need to be submitted to Supreme for acceptance.
It is the month of
May, the month of Our Lady……….take that rosary that you carry in your pocket
(remember your promise) and make a special attempt to pray it this month. May God bless you and keep you in the palm of
His hand.
Vivat Jesu,

Council Golf Shirts
Several Brother Knights have inquired about the blue golf shirts
with the Knights of Columbus logo that some members have. We have
contacted a company that offers these shirts (pictured below – but in
blue). The shirts come in sizes up to XXXLarge,
and will have “Siena Council 8596” embroidered above the logo. The
cost of the shirts is $21.00 each,
and we will need to order a minimum of 25 shirts.

(Will be BLUE with council number above logo)
If you don’t have a council shirt, have out grown your old one, or
your old one is just plain worn out, this is your opportunity to order a new
one.
Please mail or email your request to Jim Winstead,
First
Degree Team
We have volunteers for our
rejuvenated First Degree team now……..they are learning
their parts and soon (July) we will again be self-sufficient in putting on our
First Degree. Again we owe a debt of
THANKS to our Brothers at
THOMAS THE TANK
ENGINE
There is a great opportunity to help out HABITAT
FOR HUMANITY even for those of you that aren’t available
to actually help building a house…………or to PADS without contributing
money……..and that opportunity is to donate your time !!! Every year the Illinois Railroad Museum hosts
“Thomas the Tank Engine” which draws children and families from literally
hundreds of miles around………and the Museum needs HELP with all of those
folks……….and so they make a cash donation to Habitat for Humanity or PADS for
the hours that YOU donate in helping out………….there are two weekends available
and the work is EASY
and FUN !!! You might help in the Thomas store, be a
crossing guard, ride on a train, etc……………..and your family (older children) can
help out too!! The weekends are August
19, 20 and 21 and the following weekend
27 and 28. Give Hank Schmalen
a call (847) 426-7326 to volunteer or
email hschmal@sbcglobal.net
Tune-Up
How often do you have your oil
changed or your car “tuned-up” ? If you’re like most of us, you probably take
pretty good care of that vehicle you have so much invested in, right? How often do you make that same effort to
“tune-up” your soul …… your commitment to God? On Saturday October 8th
the Catholic Mens Conference will be held once again
at NIU. It is a day of some great
speakers, time for reflection, chance for Reconciliation, Mass and a chance to
recharge those spiritual batteries and you don’t have to do a thing!! Just be there!!. We usually carpool from St. Catherine’s,
