SIENA POST DISPATCH

Brother Knights,
It is hard to believe that this is my LAST letter to you as your Grand Knight. The year has certainly sped by. It has been my privilege to serve as your leader and I want to thank all of you for your help and support. Special thanks go out to those of you who really embrace the spirit of getting involved and in keeping Siena alive and vital. At the risk of leaving someone out, I won’t name names but you know who you are………we cannot exist without your continued selflessness, please keep up the great work my Brothers.
Congratulations go out to S.K. Jim Winstead our new Grand Knight and his cabinet of Officers listed below who were elected at our May meeting. They will be installed after the 4:30pm Mass on Saturday June 4th and of course ALL of you and your families are welcome to come and support our new leaders and celebrate with dinner afterwards. If you have not done so and plan to attend the dinner please let me know so that we can plan enough food for this event…..hschmal@sbcglobal.net
Several of us met prior to the last Officers meeting to go over our Council By-Laws. We suggested quite a number of changes that more reflect how our Council operates. These will be submitted to the Council in the near future for approval prior to submission to the Supreme Advocate for final approval.
I received from St. Margaret Mary Council a brochure describing a 6” white flexible magnet (you know, similar to the ribbons you see on the back of the cars) cut into the shape of the Nativity with the words “Keep Christ in Christmas” printed across the bottom………….they will sell them to us in packages of 300 for $1. each and we can in turn resell them to our community for whatever we think we can get (we should be able to get at least $2-3 each) as both a fund-raiser and way to get the message out to our area……….can you imagine seeing hundreds of these on cars at the Christmas Season? Silent Evangelization!!! We talked about this at our last meeting and the Brothers present agreed but thought we should have Father Rich’s support (which we do !!)………I think we should commit for 2 packages (600)……we can talk at the June meeting.
Finally Brothers I look forward to serving for the next three years as a Trustee of our Council. As some of you know, I am pursuing the Permanent Diaconate. I have just finished two years of Aspirancy (a time of discernment) and in July, Deb and I go before the Bishop’s Commission for scutinies prior to (God willing) being invited into Candidacy (a formal step toward ordination). If I am accepted it will be another 3 years of work and study and I would ask that you keep me in your prayers as I continue the journey to serving as a Deacon. May God bless you and keep you and may His face shine its light upon you!!
Vivat Jesu,
hank

IRISHFEST IS COMING
Irishfest is just around the corner (September 9-10-11) and as in the past we will be needing LOTS of hands to help with this great fundraiser for our Council. You will be getting a letter in the near future asking you (and your spouse and older children) to sign up for a shift or two over the weekend in our food booth. Many of you have helped out in the past and know that it can be a LOT of fun………so please keep the Knights in mind BEFORE you sign up to help with some other function at the Fest……we just want a piece of your generosity !!!
THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE
There is a great opportunity to help out HABITAT FOR HUMANITY even for those of you that aren’t available to actually help building a house…………or to PADS without contributing money……..and that opportunity is to donate your time !!! Every year the Illinois Railroad Museum hosts “Thomas the Tank Engine” which draws children and families from literally hundreds of miles around………and the Museum needs HELP with all of those folks……….and so they make a cash donation to Habitat for Humanity or PADS for the hours that YOU donate in helping out………….there are two weekends available and the work is EASY and FUN!!! You might help in the Thomas store, be a crossing guard, ride on a train, etc……………..and your family (older children) can help out too!! The weekends are August 19, 20 and 21 and the following weekend 27 and 28. Give Hank Schmalen a call (847) 426-7326 to volunteer or email hschmal@sbcglobal.net
Tune-Up
How often do you have your oil changed or your car “tuned-up”? If you’re like most of us, you probably take pretty good care of that vehicle you have so much invested in, right? How often do you make that same effort to “tune-up” your soul …… your commitment to God? On Saturday October 8th the Catholic Men’s Conference will be held once again at NIU. It is a day of some great speakers, time for reflection, chance for Reconciliation, Mass and a chance to recharge those spiritual batteries and you don’t have to do a thing!! Just be there!! We usually carpool from St. Catherine’s, leaving about 7:30 am and returning about 5:30pm. Give attending this year some serious thought my brothers…..mark it on your calendar, put it in your Palm and reserve the date. More info will be coming or contact Hank Schmalen for info at hschmal@sbcglobal.net.
Now That’s Italian
The Knights are hosting a Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday October 15th after the 4:30pm Mass. We have enlisted the help of the Youth Group to help serve and the event will be held in the school gym. The proceeds will be split between us, the Youth and the School. If you would like to volunteer to help plan this event, please contact Jim Winstead (847) 426-0078 or jas.winstead@worldnet.att.net
Siena K of C Family BBQ
Our Council will be hosting a family BBQ after the 4:30pm Mass on Saturday August 6th at Binnie Woods Forest Preserve. Our new Grand Knight, Jim Winstead has made all of the arrangements and all we need is YOU and your family to come and have a good time!!! More information will be coming but mark your calendars to come and have a good time.
2005 Hammer Open Golf Outing
Our Brothers in Algonquin are hosting their 6th Annual Hammer Golf Open on Sunday August 28th at the Golf Club of Illinois in Algonquin. 100% of the proceeds from this event go directly to charity. Last year they were able to raise $13,500 for the American Cancer Society, the Rett Syndrome Assocaiteon of IL and United Cerebral Palsy. It is a Four-Man-Scramble format and includes contests for Hole inn One, Closest to Pin, Longest Drive, Longest Putt and Fifty Fifty drawing and DINNER. The cost is $110. per golfer and includes green fees, cart, dinner, awards and prizes ($25 for dinner only). Contact Dan Schneider (847) 854-9903 or Juergen Huellen (847) 658-9342 to register or for more information.
Corn Roaster
If any Brother knows of someone who has INSIDE storage space that would be appropriate to store our corn roaster in please let us know. We currently have it at a facility in Huntley and of course there is a monthly charge which if possible we would like to negate…………so if you know of a generous soul with a warehouse that they would be willing to donate a small portion of……..let me know…………..
