Grand Knight’s Message

I recently looked at our council’s membership roster and was shocked to discover how many brother Knights I have never met.  Hopefully in the coming months we can remedy this, and I’ll start by at least introducing myself.  I’ve lived in Dundee and been a member of St. Catherine’s for almost 15 years.  My wife, Cindi, and I celebrated our 37th anniversary this past January, and we have two grown children, Jennifer, 24, and Donald, 21.  I’m a Eucharistic Minister for the 11:30 masses, and Cindi and I are also Greeters.  I am a 4th Degree Knight and have served the council as Treasurer for a couple of terms, Chancellor, and I’ve been the Blood Drive Chairman for the past few years.

I want to express my gratitude and congratulate departing Grand Knight Hank Schmalen for all he accomplished during his leadership year.  Hank was an exceptional Grand Knight and the example he set will be a difficult one to follow.

As Grand Knight, I want to be accessible and want you to know how to reach me.  If you need or want to call me, my telephone number is 847-426-0078.  You can write me at 1870 Glenmoor Drive, West Dundee, IL 60118, or  email me at jas.winstead@worldnet.att.net

The theme for my term as Grand Knight will be “Involvement”.  Not only will I strive to be an involved Grand Knight, but I will also strive to involve as many of you as I can in our service projects, fund raisers and family activities.

Two of our major charitable fund raisers are coming up in a couple of months, and everyone will have ample opportunity to become involved.  Irish Fest will be the weekend of September 9 thru the 11th; followed a week later by our annual Tootsie Roll Drive.  Someone will soon be calling upon you to help with these very important events.  When you are called, please remember the principle of our First Degree … Charity.  I know everyone has a busy schedule and it is often hard to make time for the Knights, but I urge each of you to commit just an hour or two to either or both of these critical events.

Not all of our up-coming events involve work.  If you have ever thought the Knights just aren’t fun anymore; that all we do is ask you to volunteer; that all we do is try to raise money for this organization or that activity; that we never have any events that are just fun … well, I beg to differ!  We’ll be hosting our second annual family barbeque on August 6th.  All you need to participate in this event is a healthy appetite and the willingness to have a little fun.  Brother Sir Knights Dan Stroick and Joe Borowski are still arguing over who actually won the bocce ball tournament last year, and that’s just one of the games we’ll have this year … and there will again be “unbelievable” prizes for all.  There are no excuses for missing this event.

Finally, our July business meeting will be on Monday, July 11th at 7:30 in the Father McKinstra Community Room.  Every member is invited to attend.  I won’t lecture on why it’s important to attend business meetings, I’ll just say this will be your opportunity to observe me stumble through my first meeting as Grand Knight and to point out and poke fun at all of my mistakes!  Our business meetings usually only last about an hour and this meeting will be followed by a little pizza party.  Please come … all members are welcome!

Vivat Jesu

Jim

Council Family Barbeque & Picnic

This year’s family barbeque will be on Saturday, August 6th at the Binnie Woods Forest Preserve in Dundee.  Binnie Woods is a mile west of Randall Road on Binnie Road.   The barbeque will start at 5:00 PM and last until dark.  It you normally attend 4:30 Mass, don’t worry, just come late.

The council will provide all of the beverages and food just like we did last year.  We’ll again be serving brats, burgers and dogs, accompanied by potato salad, cole slaw and chips.  Ummm … Ummm, can’t beat that!

There will be games for the kids and adults, prizes, and fun for all.  This is a family event, so bring out the whole family – the kids, mama, Uncle Joe and Grandma Ruth – everyone is invited.  As a matter of fact, if you have a potential candidate for membership, this is a perfect time to bring him and his family along and introduce them to the Knights.

Financial Notice Publication

As many of you may or may not know, Jim Roy, the 22 year old son of Past Grand Knight Bill Roy, is suffering from a rare form of cancer called Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor (DSRCT).  Jim was recently married and he and his wife, Melissa just bought a home in Carpentersville.  Jim is an apprentice carpenter, and was about to become a journeyman when his cancer struck.  Due to his illness and ongoing treatment, which includes chemotherapy, Jim has been unable to work.

At the June 13, 2005 business meeting a motion was made and seconded for the Council to contribute $1,000.00 to the James Roy Benefit Fund to assist Jim and his family.  The motion was tabled pending publication of the proposed expenditure.  The motion will again be brought up for vote at the next business meeting.

In the interim, please keep Jim, his wife, Melissa, and the entire Roy family in your prayers and, as a Council, we pray for the Divine healing mercy of our Lord, Jesus Christ for Jim.

If you would like to make a private donation, please send it to the James Roy Benefit Fund, care of Village Bank and Trust, 444 N. Rand Road, Barrington, IL 60010-9951.

Thomas the Tank Engine

There is a great opportunity to help  Habitat For Humanity without actually building a house, or to assist PADS without contributing money.  Every year the Illinois Railroad Museum hosts “Thomas the Tank Engine” which draws families from throughout the area. The museum needs help with all these visitors.  To attract volunteers, the museum makes a cash donation to Habitat for Humanity or PADS for the hours each volunteer donates.  Two weekends are available to help and the work is easy and   fun.  You might help in the Thomas store, be a crossing guard, or even ride on a train.  The weekends are August 19, 20 and 21   and August, 27 and 28.  Call Hank Schmalen at  (847) 426-7326 to volunteer or email  hschmal@sbcglobal.net

Tune-Up

How often do you change the oil or have your car “tuned-up” ?  If you’re like most of us, you probably take pretty good care of that car you have so much invested in.  How often do you make that same effort to “tune-up” your soul … your commitment to God?  On Saturday, October 8th the Catholic Men’s Conference will again be held at NIU.  It is a day of great speakers, reflection, Reconciliation, Mass and a chance to recharge your spiritual batteries.  All you have to do is be there. We will carpool from St. Catherine’s, leaving about 7:30 am and returning about 5:30pm.  Give attendance some serious thought … mark it on your calendar, put it in your Palm and reserve the date.  More info will be coming or contact Hank Schmalen at  hschmal@sbcglobal.net.
